Shock Oil Weight

Thicker (higher weight) shock oil resists movement more, giving a firmer, more controlled feel; thinner oil moves more freely, giving a softer, more compliant ride over bumps.

  • Rough, high-speed terrain: Slightly thicker oil helps control bottoming-out on jumps and big hits.
  • Technical, low-speed terrain: Thinner oil helps the suspension stay compliant and maintain traction over small bumps and roots.

Springs

Spring rate (stiffness) affects how much the truck squats and rolls under acceleration, braking, and cornering.

  • Stiffer springs: Less body roll, more predictable handling at speed, but can skip over smaller bumps rather than absorbing them.
  • Softer springs: Better traction and bump absorption, but more body roll and squat under hard acceleration or braking.

Ride Height

  • Higher ride height: More ground clearance for rough terrain, but raises the center of gravity, increasing rollover risk in hard cornering.
  • Lower ride height: Better stability and cornering grip, but less clearance for obstacles.

Match this to your terrain — a truck built for jumps and rough tracks wants more clearance; a truck built for smoother, high-speed courses can run lower.

Droop (Suspension Travel)

Droop is how far the suspension can extend downward. More droop keeps wheels in contact with the ground longer over dips and off-camber terrain — valuable for traction, especially in technical driving — but too much droop on a high-speed truck can cause unpredictable handling on landings.

Camber

Slight negative camber (top of the tire tilted inward) generally improves cornering grip by keeping more tire contact patch on the ground during hard turns, at a small cost to straight-line traction.

A Simple Tuning Process

  1. Start from the manufacturer's recommended baseline settings — don't tune blind.
  2. Change one variable at a time (oil weight, then springs, then ride height) and test between each change.
  3. Match settings to your actual terrain and driving style, not just "what the pros run" — a setup built for a smooth track will feel wrong on rough terrain and vice versa.
  4. Keep notes on what you change — suspension tuning is easy to lose track of without a log.
